Will Wilkins get his men in?

Last updated : 10 February 2009 By Paul Lagan

Ray Wilkins takes charge today of Chelsea FC.
Butch Wilkins is seen by just about everybody as a temporary boss, perhaps for only a few days.
But I reckon Ray wants the job full-time and why not?
Captain of Chelsea aged 18, Ray's extraordinary vision as a player could now be translated onto the managerial field.
Don't forget he has had stints at QPR and Fulham as a number one. He failed to cover himself in glory in either posts, but the experience will serve him well in the coming days.
He has also tasted success at Chelsea as assistant to Gianluca Vialli.
Chelsea, no matter where Ray has plied his trade elsewhere is still his club.
I think Roman Abramovich has reached a crossroads in how he can deal with Chelsea.
He can continue this musical chairs of a game with managers or he can change the whole essence of the club.
Chelsea are loathed by everyone bar the Chelsea fans.
By extension, everyone loathes Abramovich - does he really want or care about that?
By appointing Ray as a full-time manager and letting him bring in trusted staff, Abramovich has the rare opportunity to show the world he can command respect and show compassion.
And boy does this club need that.
Ray would approach older brother Graham to look at the youth set-up.
Graham has kept a close eye on the English scene. He is constantly at games, many a Stamford Bridge as a media man for one of the world's largest sports agencies.
Let's not forget younger brother Dean, who has experience at Brighton who could assist Graham.
Ray knows the international scene, has fantastic contacts and commands respect from players - all the attributes required to handle the daily pressures heaped upon managers from high-profile footballers, greedy agents, and from the gentle probing questions of footballing journalists.
Abramovich can create a dynasty at Chelsea as only a Russian can.
Ray, Graham and Dean could just be the answer.
