Turnbull horror show for the stiffs

Heaven help Chelsea should Petr Cech suffer an injury and need replacing.

Ross Turnbull, currently Chelsea's goalkeeper on the bench had a howler of a first half against Aston Villa for the reserves tonight and things did not improve in the second.

The Blues kids were humiliated 4-0 in their first league game of the season at Brentford's Griffin Park.

Turnbull was caught napping on nine minutes when Andreas Weimann, Villa's number nine, disposed Turnbull as the goalkeeper tried to keep hold of the ball on the edge of his area

The Villa man simply took the ball off Turnbull and slotted home from a sharp angle.

Then on 25 minutes, and with no confidence at all, he failed to gather an easy long ball. Instead of punching the ball away, he tried to catch it. However he let the ball drop and Ciaran Clarke tucked home the ball into the vacant net.

Turnbull was a free signing from Middleborough in the summer.

He featured in both defeats by Chelsea last season, conceding seven goal in total in 5-0 and 2-0 defeats.

Turnbull was watched by Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti and the Italian won't be best pleased

Also on show, up front was Daniel Sturridge. The striker had just one effort on goal seconds from the end of the first half.

The third goal came 53 minutes when a Villa corner saw defender Sam Hutchinson head into his own net from six yards with Turnbull nowhere close to it.

Sturridge did rattle the Villa crossbar with a fine strike from a free-kick on 58 minutes to lift his spirits.

Chelsea midfielder Gael Kakuta had a fine, stinging strike on target on 67 minutes, but Andy Marshall, signed from Coventry, dived expertly to parry the ball for a corner.

Turnbull's personal nightmare continued two minutes later when his sloppy goal kick went straight to Marc Albrighton who raced forward and slotted home a low strike which Turnbull was also slow to get down to.

Chelsea skipper Sam Hutchinson said afterwards: "We were punished by a good team, we made lots of mistakes. It was difficult for the boys but we should have performed better that that."

Chelsea's new reserve boss Steve Holland , who replaced Paul Clement, now on first team duty, has much work to do with his young charges but Ancelotti has a major decision to make - persevere with Turnbull and risk a potential nightmare or bring Hilario back into first team consideration for the bench against Burnley, at home on Saturday.
