The Chelsea XI That Should Face Bayern Munich in the Champions League

The Champions League returns this week, with our eyes set to feast on a mouthwatering last 16 clash between Chelsea and Bayern Munich.

This will be the first time these two teams have met since they did battle in the 2012 final, when the Blues emerged victorious in a thrilling penalty shootout.

Chelsea head coach Frank Lampard scored a penalty on that famous night, but his preparations for this game have been hampered by a number of first team injuries. Christian Pulisic and Callum Hudson-Odoi remain out, while top scorer Tammy Abraham continues to be bothered by an ankle problem.

Ruben Loftus Cheek's return to the squad is a major boost, but there seems to be a one-in one-out policy in place for Chelsea's medical room; N'Golo Kante another absentee with an adductor problem.

So with plenty to mull over in regards to team selection, here's what Frank may look to do come kick off...

Goalkeepers & Defenders

Willy Caballero

Willy Caballero (GK) - What’s really going on between Lampard and Kepa is anyone’s guess - amid rumours of falling out and the board’s tutting disapproval, the world’s most expensive goalkeeper has been benched for the last four games. His replacement, Caballero, has fared no better, failing to keep a clean sheet since he came into the side - oh well, it's only Robert Lewandowski leading Bayern's line.

Reece James (RWB) - This season marks James’ first involvement in the Champions League, but his recent consistency in the Premier League more than qualifies him to start in this knockout fixture. In his first full 90 minutes in Europe, the youngster impressed against Valencia, demonstrating plenty of attacking menace.

Andreas Christensen (RCB) - Lampard’s centre back pairing has been a carousel of confusion at times, with several players rotating in and out of the Blues’ back line. Christensen and Rudiger seem to be the preferred option right now, but it's likely they'll be joined by a Spanish guy named Dave for this one.

Antonio Rüdiger (CB) - A strong, physical presence in the box, Rüdiger poses a threat at both ends of the pitch. Will want to put in a good performance against international teammate Thomas Müller, but his overriding problem will be the threat of Lewandowski.

César Azpilicueta (LCB) - Was on the receiving of a nasty looking tackle from Tottenham's Giovani Lo Celso at the weekend, but should be fit to lead the side. Will look to support in the wide areas defensively, but will also look to nullify the threat of Lewandowski.

Marcos Alonso (LWB) - Alonso will be riding high on the crest of an adrenaline wave after scoring the winner against Spurs. Has been in and out of the team this season, so proving a point to Lampard that he's tightened up his game will be a priority.

Midfielders

Jorginho

Jorginho (CM) - Amid injuries and Lampard’s restless squad rotation, Jorginho has been a dependable lynchpin for Chelsea this season. Will be looking to turnover possession in the middle of the park for the Blues, and break up play at every opportunity. Sitting deep in midfield will also allow James and Alonso to bomb on down the flanks.

Mateo Kovačič (CM) - Another mainstay of Chelsea's midfield this season, Kovačič will be more creative than Jorginho. Plays a key role in delivering a high midfield press, and his ball retention skills will be needed to keep a talented Bayern at bay,

Forwards

Olivier Giroud

Willian (RW) - Benched at the weekend against Spurs, Willian should be restored to the starting lineup - providing Lampard chooses to go with some experience. Relishes the big occasion, and should give opposing number David Alaba a difficult evening on the right.

Mason Mount (LW) - A graduate of Chelsea's academy, Mount has been one of the real success stories of the season at Stamford Bridge. A lean spell in front of goal has affected his confidence of late, but there's no denying he's a talented individual on the ball.

Olivier Giroud (ST) - After months and months of waiting in the wings, Giroud was finally given an opportunity to shine at the weekend against Spurs - and grabbed his opportunity with both hands. An experienced head, Giroud - like Willian - loves the big occasion and his aerial presence will pose a significant threat to Bayern.
