Tammy Abraham Insists the Football Season Can Only Resume When It's Safe to Do So

Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham has insisted that the football season can only get back up and running again when it is safe to do so.

The 22-year-old has enjoyed a breakthrough 2019/20 season at the Blues, having netted 13 goals in the Premier League - including a first top-flight hat-trick at Wolves - and his performances throughout the campaign have led to regular call-ups at international level.

Having helped put his team in a good position to finish in the top four, the forward recently talked about his desire to finish off the season, but also added that he would be willing to wait until it's been medically ruled as safe to do so.

The England international is particularly concerned about the dangers of spreading the coronavirus if he contacted it, given that his father Anthony is asthmatic and therefore may be at greater risk to be infected than others.

Speaking via the Daily Mail, he said: "Everyone can see what's going on in the world. Everyone wants to come back to football. I love football. It was my first full season at Chelsea, I was having a great season and I would love it to continue.

"The most important thing for me is for everyone to be well and safe, and for things to start opening up. Then by all means football can always come back. If it's safe to do so let's do it, but if it's not then we will wait.

"My dad has asthma, so if I was to return to the Premier League and, God forbid, I do catch this disease and bring it home it's the worst thing possible.

"The last thing I need is to catch the virus myself or be in contact with anyone with the virus."

So concerned is the Chelsea striker that he stated that he would consider moving out of his family home in Surrey, and move into a hotel to isolate himself in order to keep his family safe.

He continued: "It's a hard one. It's something we've all been thinking about for the last six or seven weeks. If the Premier League does come back, I don't know what I'd do but the hotel could be an option; to self-isolate away from my family.

"I've got my dad's full support for going back. He just wants me to go back. He's one of my biggest fans.

"As players, we've just got to be patient and wait for the clubs, the Premier League and the Government to come to a decision about whether it's safe for us to do so. We'll take it on from there.

"If they bring back the Premier League then it's clearly safe enough to do so. If they don't then it's clearly not."
