Portsmouth chief executive Peter Storrie revealed "We must have made football history by bringing in a captain of his country who two days before signed in a £3.5m deal for Chelsea.
"I don't need to extol his virtues because he is captain of his country and Chelsea have just paid £3.5m for him.
"Roman and officials from Chelsea Football Club have been superb and true gentlemen throughout our negotiations and we would like to publicly put on record our thanks."
