Sam Kerr signs new Chelsea contract until 2024

Sam Kerr has signed a two-year extension to her Chelsea contract, committing her to the club until 2024.

Kerr joined the Blues back in 2019, living up to her reputation as one of the world's best players since.

After her maiden campaign with the Blues was interrupted due to the coronavirus pandemic, she netted 21 goals in 22 WSL appearances last campaign, which was enough to win her the Golden Boot.

In addition, her fruitful partnership with Fran Kirby helped fire Chelsea to the 2021 Champions League final - where they were soundly beaten by Barcelona.

The Australia captain has begun the current season in similarly inspired form, registering six goals and two assists already in the WSL.

Tying her down to a longer-term deal is a huge boost for Chelsea and Kerr revealed her delight at the news on Tuesday.

"It’s really exciting. I’m really happy at the club. We’ve had good success, being at a club like Chelsea is an amazing opportunity," Kerr said.

"The time was just right, I feel really comfortable being here. I think the club gives me every opportunity to succeed as a player.

"I can’t see myself going anywhere else in the world or leaving Europe, having what I have at Chelsea.

"The time was right, honestly, I didn’t feel like I wanted to rush into anything, just like signing here the first time, it just happened naturally."

General manager Paul Green added: "We are absolutely delighted that Sam has extended her deal with the club. Sam is quite simply one of the world’s best strikers and goalscorers.

"We look to continue to build on our recent successes, and Sam will play a big role in achieving those targets in the future."
