Rangers Among Host of Clubs Linked With January Move for Olivier Giroud

Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud has been linked with an unlikely move north of the border to Steven Gerrard's Rangers as he seeks regular game time.

Giroud is out of favour at Stamford Bridge, with both Tammy Abraham and Michy Batshuayi ahead of him in the pecking order in Frank Lampard's setup.

The 33-year-old has made just seven appearances in all competitions this season, mainly from the bench, leading to rumours that he will seek a switch in January.

Remarkably, the towering forward remains Didier Deschamps preferred starting striker for the French national team, but Giroud will not want to jeopardise his chances of making Les Bleus' squad for Euro 2020 in the summer.

According to L'Equipe (via the Daily Record), Glasgow outfit Rangers are one of the sides to offer Giroud an escape route. The Old Firm side are said to have approached the player with a view to a future transfer.

The experienced striker recently admitted he may have to leave the Blues, saying: “It will be difficult to stay at Chelsea. I'm going to have a chat with the coach. Chances are there will be change because I don't have enough time to express myself."

Rangers already have Jermaine Defoe and Alfredo Morelos in their ranks, although the latter has been linked with a move away from Ibrox on several occasions.

However, according to the same L'Equipe report, Giroud's preferred destination is Inter, while Deschamps has told his main striker to reject moves to MLS. The site also suggests that the player is open to a return to France, although clubs there may be priced out of a move.

The Frenchman is out of contract in the summer and is therefore free to speak to other clubs about potential moves when his deal expires.

L'Equipe's report claims that a loan move away from Chelsea seems likely before a permanent switch in the summer, although with his contract set to run out anyway, Giroud may want to clarify his future sooner rather than later - especially with what will surely be his last international tournament fast approaching.

German giants Borussia Dortmund have also been linked with a move for the veteran forward, as well as French side Bordeaux.
