PSG vs Real Madrid headlines the Champions League last 16 redraw

PSG vs Real Madrid is the standout tie of the second attempt at the Champions League last 16 after the draw was redone by UEFA in Nyon, Switzerland on Monday afternoon.

The first draw, which had seen Manchester United paired with Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich matched with Atletico Madrid, was earlier voided by UEFA because of a 'technical problem' involving United's accidental exclusion from a potential tie against Atletico.

This time, United and Atletico were indeed paired against each other, while Chelsea and Lille was the only tie that was repeated from the botched first draw.

Real Madrid had been matched with Benfica first time round and so will undoubtedly be unhappy to have now been drawn against PSG. The tie pits Sergio Ramos, fitness permitting, against the club he served for 16 years, while Kylian Mbappe faces a team that tried to buy him in the summer.

Liverpool have been handed a tie against Inter, with Manchester City to face Sporting CP.

It was a random draw so each seeded group winner was paired against an unseeded group runner-up, while country protection also remained in place. Clubs who qualified from the same group were also kept apart for this round.

Heading into 2022, last 16 first leg ties will be split across consecutive weeks on either 15/16 February or 22/23 February. The return legs will follow on 8/9 March or 15/16 March.

This is the first season in which the away goals rule has been scrapped, so extra-time is guaranteed if the aggregate score is level at the end of the second leg.
