Osgood - Chelsea Can Beat Arsenal

Last updated : 06 March 2003 By -
Peter Osgood – The King Of Stamford Bridge - has today spoken of the “great task” that awaits Chelsea come Saturday afternoon but he insists that despite Arsenal’s obvious class, if Chelsea are at their best, they are more than capable than doing the job!

Ossie, the hero of the 1970 FA Cup Final against Leeds, became the first player to score in every round of the FA Cup, a record that still stands. He was Leed’s nemesis in the Final replay at Old Trafford when he finished off a fine move by throwing himself onto a diving header which left Leed’s keeper David Harvey with no chance and equalised, bringing Chelsea back into the game.

On Me Head Son
Peter is therefore a man of vast FA Cup experience and with his beloved Blues taking on the might of Arsenal this weekend, Peter is under no illusions as to the size of the task that awaits them.

"Arsenal are simply awesome, the best in the country," said Osgood. "They don't have any weaknesses and it doesn't help that Chelsea haven't won a cup tie against them for many years.

"But that run has to end some time and the beauty of the cup is that one break, one stroke of fortune can make all the difference.

"It's about how a side performs on the day, not over a season and on that basis, Arsenal are not unbeatable. They will treat Chelsea with respect."

Peter’s words must not be taken likely and definitely not seen as simple bravado in the face of adversity. We are all fully aware of Chelsea’s ability to beat anybody on their day – and there is no doubt that against Arsenal, Chelsea’s day will certainly come.

Let us not forget that great and wonderful record that Chelsea themselves held against the old rivals Tottenham. Surely we haven’t forgotten that gut wrenching, vomit inducing humiliation in last years Worthington Cup, as that very record came crashing around our ears. Chelsea have NEVER beaten Arsenal at Highbury in the FA Cup but one day soon, Chelsea will finally lay these Arsenal ghosts to rest.
