Newcastle could set about targeting a number of high-profile free agents once the anticipated £300m Saudi takeover of the club is complete, and Chelsea's Pedro may be among them.
The Spaniard is the latest big name linked with a move to the north east, with his Chelsea contract running out at the end of the 2019/20 season.
According to the Chronicle, the veteran winger has already been offered to Newcastle in the knowledge that the club's new owners are likely to target several household names ahead of their inaugural campaign in charge.
It seems it is now a question of when Mike Ashley's £300m sale will go through. And, with Pedro set to become a free agent this summer, it's understood the Magpies are one of the clubs in contention to secure the 32-year-old's signature.
The Chronicle claims that due to his age and wage demands, Pedro is the kind of player Mike Ashley would avoid, but the new money means the club will be more willing to pursue big-name, short-term targets.
With a number of renowned names drawing closer to the end of their current deals, it appears the current climate will see several star players move onto pastures new. And, it's understandable that Newcastle's new owners might look to make several marquee signings upon their arrival.
Edinson Cavani, Willian and Adam Lallana are both mentioned in the same report as notable free agents - although a move for either of the former two would be incredibly ambitious.
Nonetheless, it appears Pedro's representatives have perhaps earmarked the Magpies as a potential destination because of the desirable contractual terms that might be on offer, while there are other clubs on their shortlist.
To be fair to Pedro, he's a World Cup and European Championship winner with Spain, a Champions League winner with Barcelona , and a Premier League winner with Chelsea. And, even if he's in the 'twilight' of his career at 32-years-old, he could yet have plenty to offer a club like Newcastle, who will be looking to make up considerable ground on the country's elite once the takeover is complete.
So, what can we expect? Well, Pedro definitely won't be playing his football at Stamford Bridge next season. Newcastle will certainly have the money to cover his wages, and may find the prospect of singing the Spaniard on a free too good an opportunity to turn down.
