Marcel To Keep French Captaincy

Last updated : 20 August 2002 By -
It had been rumoured that the 33-year-old would possibly relinquish the captain’s armband following criticism for being too old and question marks have surrounded his captaincy following the early exit of the French side in this year's World Cup Finals.

Real Madrid star Zinedine Zidane and Arsenal captain Patrick Vieira had been mentioned as possible successors, but Desailly has remained new coach Jacques Santini’s choice. He said, “There is no reason to question who will hold the position that belongs to Marcel Desailly”.

He said the decision was made after consultation with team members and officials over the last few weeks.

Both Desailly and Petit have been included in the French squad for this Wednesday’s friendly against Tunisia.

Let’s hope they both make it through the game unscathed, fully focused and ready for United come Friday night!
