Kepa Arrizabalaga Monitored by Former Side Athletic Club After Frank Lampard Decision

Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga is apparently being monitored by his former club in Spain, after being axed from Frank Lampard's starting lineup.

The Spain international moved from Athletic Club to Stamford Bridge for a world-record fee for a goalkeeper in 2018, going on to make 85 appearances across all competitions where he's kept 29 clean sheets.

Despite largely impressing in his first season at Chelsea, Kepa has struggled for form in 2019/20 and lost his place in the starting lineup against Leicester City.

And after being named among the substitutes last week, The Sun claims Kepa could actually move away from Chelsea at the end of the season after falling out of favour with Lampard - while Athletic Club are interested in re-signing their academy graduate.

It's rightly pointed out that the 25-year-old's wages will be a major stumbling block for Los Leones, who re-invested much of Kepa's £72m fee back into their squad.

The Sun don't actually mention what Chelsea's stance on Kepa's future actually is, so while Athletic Club might be monitoring his future at Stamford Bridge, there's very little to suggest it's a move which will happen at the end of the season.

Despite appearing to struggle in recent weeks, as well as his high-profile falling out with Maurizio Sarri in last season's Carabao Cup final, Kepa has actually been one of the most impressive goalkeepers in the Premier League since his arrival.

At 25, Kepa is unsurprisingly getting comparisons with Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea, who also struggled to adapt following his move to the Premier League from Atlético Madrid.

If Chelsea do decide to cut their losses this summer they could make a move for Crystal Palace goalkeeper Vicente Guaita.

Chelsea's goalkeeping scout Christophe Lovichon has already been in contact with Guaita as he enters the final year of his contract next season, although he'd likely come in as a replacement to current back up goalkeeper Willy Caballero.
