John Terry must not resign as England skipper.
The real battle is not Terry's alleged private life, but the battle being played out between the newspapers right to decide the news agenda and not the courts.
It’s not if Terry is the right person to captain his country - it’s plainly obvious that he is.
Chelsea FC have rightly decided that it’s a matter for Terry and the people involved and not directly involved as his role as a Chelsea player.
That decision has to apply to Terry’s status as England skipper.
It’s believed that England boss Fabio Capello will decide on the captaincy’s fate.
The bigwigs at the FA have abdicated any responsibility and heaped it on Capello.
However should Capello decide to take the armband away from Terry, who will get it?
Rio Ferdinand is suspended from playing for an on-field attack on a player - a footballing reason. He is currently the second-in-command to Terry.
Steven Gerrard has had his day in court and acquitted over a nightclub attack incident.
Wayne Rooney, who has captained England was not even given the Manchester United captaincy at the weekend in the absence of Ferdinand, Neville, Giggs etc. That honour went to Frenchman Patrice Evra.
So from a purely footballing reason there is no need for Capello to alter his correct decision to give Terry the job.
Being a leader means making tough decisions - not easy ones.
JT, you must make the toughest decision of all and NOT resign.
You need it, but just as importantly, your country needs YOU.
