Gudjohnsen Linked To Sunderland

Sunderland are set to launch a club-record £12million bid for Chelsea's Eidur Gudjohnsen, claims the Sunday Express and Sunday Mirror.

The paper says Sunderland boss Peter Reid has turned his attentions to the Iceland striker

after failing to land Robbie Keane.

Reid sees Gudjohnsen, who has also attracted interest from Manchester United and Roma, as an ideal partner for Kevin Phillips.

The Sunday Mirror states that Sunderland will top Gudjohnsen’s £20,000-a-week pay and try to convince him he will become a hero at the Stadium of Light, playing in front of crowds of almost 50,000.

The supposed £12 million deal would shatter Sunderland’s transfer record, which currently stands at £4.5 million that was also paid to Chelsea for Emerson Thome and to Glasgow Rangers for USA World Cup star Claudio Reyna.

The paper says Chelsea boss Claudio Ranieri may find Sunderland's offer too good to refuse as he bids to reduce the London club's huge debts.

Let’s hope Chelsea and Claudio are not tempted……………
