The 23-year-old Icelandic star formed a prolific partnership with Jimmy last season amassing a combined total of 52 goals.

However, following surgery to Jimmy in the summer, Eidur missing pre-season through injury

and wild speculation surrounding both players future at the bridge, the pair have yet to find the net in the new season.

Gudjohnsen said: "Everyone expects a lot of us as they look back at last season, when we got many goals. But people at Chelsea know the story this summer.

“I missed a few weeks of pre-season and Jimmy had an operation - so we're both lacking a bit of match fitness. I will probably get another 90 minutes under my belt for Iceland this week. Then I'll soon be getting back to my best, as will Jimmy.”

Gudjohnsen then went onto discount the intense speculation surrounding his possible departure from The Bridge following a dispute over pay.

“It’s not been me putting stories in the paper this summer,” he added on ChelseaTV.

"It's all been speculation. I've always said I'm happy at Chelsea. They are the club I want to play for and that's about it from my point of view."
