Graham Potter's Champions League record compared to English managers

Graham Potter's stint as Chelsea boss has been nothing short of dire thus far, but the Englishman is still in the job and he will oversee a huge game in the Blues' season on Tuesday night.

His side will need to overcome a 1-0 deficit against the red-hot Borussia Dortmund at Stamford Bridge to advance into the Champions League quarter-finals. Potter secured an important win at the weekend over Leeds, but victory and progression into the last eight on Tuesday could prove to be the turning point in his managerial tenure.

Potter is just one of few English managers to coach in Europe's premier competition, and here's how his Champions League record stacks up against his compatriots from over the years.

Graham Potter's UCL record

  • Games managed - 6
  • Won - 4
  • Drawn - 1
  • Lost - 1
  • Win percentage - 66.6%

Chelsea's group stage campaign was a rare bright spot in an otherwise bleak 2022/23 campaign. After they were beaten by Dinamo Zagreb on Matchday 1 with Thomas Tuchel at the helm, Chelsea then went unbeaten to top the group.

Potter oversaw impressive back-to-back victories over AC Milan, as well as wins away at RB Salzburg and at home against Dinamo.

The Englishman's first defeat in the competition arrived in Dortmund as the Blues were undone by a magical counter-attacking sequence from Karim Adeyemi. Despite that defeat, Potter's win percentage in this competition currently stands at an impressive 66.6%.

Graham Potter's UCL record compared to other English managers

Isn't it remarkable that English coaches have combined to manage a mere 72 Champions League games since 1992 and only one (Potter) boasts a win percentage greater than 50%?

The Premier League sides often underperformed in the rebranded competition for much of the 1990s, with both Howard Wilkinson's Leeds and Ray Harford's Blackburn Rovers failing to reach the knockout stages.

Sir Bobby Robson also struggled while managing Porto and PSV Eindhoven, but Newcastle supporters will long remember the Magpies' Champions League campaign in 2002/03 when they were knocked out in the second group stage. No English manager has managed more games in the competition than Robson (30).

Harry Redknapp enjoyed the most memorable European campaign, however, when he guided Tottenham to the quarter-finals in 2010/11. Spurs memorably triumphed over holders Inter Milan in the group stage before they dumped out AC Milan in the last 16. Real Madrid proved to be a bridge too far in the quarters.

Gary Neville's sole UCL outing as Valencia boss unsurprisingly ended in defeat, while caretaker Leicester boss Craig Shakespeare helped the Foxes turnaround their round of 16 tie against Sevilla in 2017 before they were beaten over two legs by Atletico Madrid in the last eight.

Frank Lampard, like Shakespeare, won just a third of his Champions League games as manager. However, he is still just one of two English managers to manage in more than one UCL campaign.
