Gianluigi Donnarumma's proposed free transfer to Juventus has been thrown into doubt by the arrival of coach Massimiliano Allegri, leaving the Italian in limbo as his Milan contract runs to its end.
The 22-year-old will leave San Siro for nothing in the summer, having rejected a five-year contract worth an annual €8m net from the club which nurtured him and gave him his start in professional football.
Donnarumma had been expected to join Juve on a free transfer at the start of the new season, but the reunion between Allegri and the Bianconeri has changed matters, and he may not have a club to return to after Euro 2020, reports Corriere dello Sport.
Allegri is a huge fan of current Juventus shot-stopper Wojciech Szczesny, and he is keen on keeping the Polish star as his number one for next year. This curveball leaves no space for Donnarumma and his giant wage demands, and the Italian is starting to sweat.
In fact, super-agent Mino Raiola has told the Old Lady that his client would be willing to accept an annual salary of €6m - the same wage he currently earns, and €2m less than he was recently offered by Milan.
This news comes after Raiola had also claimed that he and Donnarumma were sitting on a €10m-a-year offer from Juventus, which now appears to have been a negotiating bluff.
I Rossoneri were desperate to keep hold of their homegrown talent, but they refuse to be held to ransom by the shot-stopper, and have since abandoned negotiations.
Instead, Milan have confirmed the signing of Lille goalkeeper Mike Maignan on a five-year deal, a clear indication that they have given up on persuading Donnarumma to stay put.
The Italian international now finds himself relying on Juve to make space for his arrival, but should Allegri decide to place his trust in Szczesny, Donnarumma may be forced to look elsewhere for his big pay-day.
Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain are among the clubs watching developments.
