Geremi also took the time to explain exactly why he left the Bernabeu stadium to take up a career at Stamford Bridge, as well as detailing why David Beckham will be a success in Madrid.

Geremi said "We are trying to build a team. Little by little, we can do things. We are trying to sign a lot of players so why can't we be like Real Madrid?

"Chelsea are one of the big clubs in Europe and have a lot of ambition. The chairman has shown how far he will go and now we have to try to win something on the pitch.

"Last year, I really enjoyed playing in England and many people told me that my football suited English football. I am an ambitious player and I wanted to play in a big team in the Champions League. I had the opportunity to play at Chelsea and I took it.

"They had been interested in signing me before but it didn't work out. Now I want to achieve with them everything that they want to achieve. I wasn't playing regularly at Real Madrid and I prefer to be at a club where I'm going to play.

"It was not because of Luis Figo or David Beckham. It is just that every player likes to play regularly.''

When questioned on David Beckham's arrival at the Bernabeu, Geremi said "I think he is a great player. I just wish him good luck and the most important thing for him is the adaptation. When you play with many big players, they make things easier for you on the pitch. And if he can adapt quickly, he is going to do some great things in Spain.''
