Abraham has been leading the line for Chelsea all season. And while the club retains Michy Batshuayi and was expected to wait until summer to strengthen, the squad lacks depth and will use the remaining nine days of the January transfer window to address it.
“You can’t say we will definitely sign a striker but we are looking. If you don’t score enough goals you won’t win enough games,” was Lampard’s reflection, via BBC Sport, after facing Arsenal.
Lampard was unable to comment on the severity of Abraham’s injury but expressed hope the home-grown 22-year-old wouldn’t be out of action for too long.
The Chelsea boss believes his side can ‘cope’ even without Abraham for an extended period, but it is the extra quality from a new striker that would take the squad to the next level.
“I hope he’s not, but if he is [out for several weeks] then yes, we do have the players to cope,” Lampard explained.
“But we can’t finish. We get into the box and we could have had three or four goals [against Arsenal]. We are having shots, having crosses and lots of ‘ooh’ moments for the crowd.
Olivier Giroud could still leave Stamford Bridge before the transfer deadline next week, while the club has been linked with a number of potential options, including Edinson Cavani, Moussa Dembele and, more ambitiously for this time of year, Timo Werner.
