Four Things We Learned Over Chelseas 8-0 Win This Weekend

Last updated : 24 December 2012 By DSG

Last night we saw a rampant Chelsea dominate the young Aston Villa side in what was an incredible display by the London club. The Blues finally got their midfield and attack working together, and ended up running riot over Aston Villa - who simply could not keep up with their opponents.

The Chelsea faithful & Rafael Benitez would have been over the moon with that performance ? with the interim manager saying ?everything impressed? him from the win.

Heres four things we learned about Chelsea this weekend from their rout over Aston Villa Football Club.

1. David Luiz should remain in midfield.

The Brazilian was unstoppable last night against Villa. After impressing us all against Monterrey in the Club World Cup, questions were asked as to whether Luiz would be able to compete against stronger opponents. Luiz proved to us all that not only is he a very capable play-maker, he is also an incredibly gifted ball winner.

Luiz broke down all of the very few Villa attacks that the Midlands club managed, whilst playing some exquisite through balls for Chelsea's more creative players to latch on to.

A fantastic free kick from the Brazilian summed up his game for the Blues, sending the ball into the back of the net - Didier Drogba esque.

Luiz picked up the Man Of The Match Award for Chelsea, and will blossom under the tenure of Rafa Benitez for sure.

2. Is Fernando Torres Finally Back?

Yep, here we go again.

Since Benitez came in as interim manager, everyone has spoke about how the Spaniard will get the best out of Fernando Torres. And to be honest, it looks like its working. According to the BBC, Torres has 14 goals in all competitions this season for Chelsea.

Heading into the match against Aston Villa, manager Rafa Benitez said that he felt Fernando Torres was close to being completely "back" this season and that the club were very happy with the current performances of the Spanish international.

Torres opened the scoring for Chelsea with a typical No.9 finish. A long range header past a despairing Brad Guzan set the tone for Chelsea, perhaps more of a striker's goal than any of the goals he has scored this season.

El Nino has now scored in his last four games for Chelsea, and ended the month of December with six goals and an assist.

One of Benitez's main tasks in his brief stay at Chelsea is too get Fernando Torres back scoring ? and both Spaniard's look like they're doing their job, very well.

3. Chelsea are still a very good team.

OK, so nobody has or probably ever will doubt that Chelsea are 'bad'.

But with one win in five before Benitez's arrival, people were beginning to doubt if this new-look Chelsea side had it in them to claw back a decent title challenge.

Chelsea boast arguably one of the strongest, most creative midfield's in Europe, with the likes of Juan Mata, Eden Hazard and Oscar. Linking up with a confident Fernando Torres makes the quartet a deadly and dynamic unit, one which is capable of beating any defence.

Under Benitez, Chelsea have conceded 8 goals, apposed to their 26 scored. The Blues have finally sorted out their priorities on the field and are looking an impressive footballing unit.

With their leader John Terry set to return in the coming months, and the likes of Mata, Hazard and Oscar, who will only get better with time, Chelsea should look to having a successful season with Benitez in charge.

4. Chelsea should keep Frank Lampard, at all costs.

The Chelsea stalwart became the all time leading goal-scorer at Chelsea Football Club this weekend. What is even more incredible is that Frank Lampard is a midfielder.

Frank earned his 500th start for Chelsea last night, and has further cemented his legacy at Chelsea as one of if not the best player for the club in its long history. Frank has scored 190 goals for the club and laid on 121 assists, and is a leader among men in this young Chelsea side.

Lampard is the only player to score at least 10 goals in nine consecutive seasons in the Premier League ? and even if takes Abramovich to offer the England international just a one-year rolling contract, the Russian oligarch would be foolish not to.
