Everton 1-0 Chelsea: Player Ratings as Gylfi Sigurdsson Penalty Sinks Blues

Chelsea slipped to a surprise 1-0 defeat to Everton on Saturday evening after Frank Lampard's men failed to break down a particularly resolute Carlo Ancelotti side at Goodison Park.

The Toffees struck on 22 minutes, when Edouard Mendy was penalised for clattering into Dominic Calvert-Lewin in the penalty area, and Gylfi Sigurdsson cooly dispatched the resulting spot-kick.

Chelsea dominated possession in the second half, but struggled to turn that control into genuine scoring chances. Everton held firm and condemned the Blues to their second league defeat of the season.

Let's take a look at the player ratings from a tense evening at Goodison Park.

EVERTON

1. Goalkeeper & Defenders

Jordan Pickford (GK) - 7/10 - Good save to turn away a free kick, and even better stop to tip Reece James' pile driver onto the post. Almost punished for a poor punch but was saved by the bar.

Mason Holgate (RB) - 9/10 - Not in his usual position and tasked with stopping Werner in full flow. Didn't allow the German a moment of peace, and wasn't afraid to overlap, either. Battled until the end. Wonderful.

Yerry Mina (CB) - 8/10 - Crashed into Pickford and almost wiped out his keeper. Pinched a header directly off Calvert-Lewin's head, which he utterly wasted. Defended pretty well, though.

Michael Keane (CB) - 8/10 - Repelled so many crosses as Giroud and Abraham launched themselves at dangerous deliveries. Remained composed with the ball at his feet and strode out of defence to offer his support further forward.

Ben Godfrey (LB) - 8/10 - Some great interceptions and reading of the game to nip Havertz's threat in the bud. Not a natural full-back and stuck to his defensive work dutifully.

2. Midfielders

Allan (CM) - 8/10 - Destructive and constructive in midfield, breaking up Chelsea attacks and setting Everton off on adventures of their own. Dogged, determined and classy.

Abdoulaye Doucoure (CM) - 8/10 - A battler in midfield, but played the ball around smartly and retained possession at crucial moments. Reliable as ever.

Gylfi Sigurdsson (CM) - 7/10 - Cool as ice in rolling home the penalty. Had less impact in open play, but always on hand to curl in a mean set-piece delivery.

3. Forwards

Alex Iwobi (RW) - 8/10 - Looked to use his pace to get in behind Ben Chilwell and hit Chelsea on the counter. Caused the defence all sorts of problems and got plenty of crosses in from wide.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin (ST) - 7/10 - Won the penalty with his razor-sharp reactions and determination to reach the ball first. Thought he'd won a second-half spot-kick, only to be denied by the offside flag.

Richarlison (LW) - 7/10 - Miscued an effort from close range. Took a few bumps and bangs as Chelsea got tight to Everton's danger man. Could have doubled the lead in the second half but fired straight at the keeper.

CHELSEA

5. Goalkeeper & Defenders

Edouard Mendy (GK) - 5/10 - Mistimed his challenge horribly on Calvert-Lewin, and dived the wrong way for the penalty. Pulled off a couple of important saves to deny Richarlison. Decisive - in the wrong way.

Reece James (RB) - 8/10 - Smacked the post with a brilliant drive from the edge of the box. One of the star performers, constantly flying down the flank and supporting his forwards.

Kurt Zouma (CB) - 7/10 - Almost came back to haunt his former employers with a strike inside the six-yard box, but couldn't beat Pickford. Defensively sound enough.

Thiago Silva (CB) - 7/10 - Used his experience in aerial battles with Calvert-Lewin and was rarely phased. A steady, uncompromising display.

Ben Chilwell (LB) - 6/10 - Torn apart by Iwobi at times. Took the risk and bombed on to whip in some crosses, and came close to finding his man on a number of occasions. Fortunate that the flag spared him from conceding a sloppy penalty.

6. Midfielders

N'Golo Kante (CM) - 7/10 - Here, there and everywhere - as always. Won so many duels in the middle, and always made sure the ball broke to himself or a teammate. Not enough on the night.

Mateo Kovacic (CM) - 6/10 - Attempted to break the lines and hurt the defence. Couldn't impact the game as he would have hoped and was nullified by his opponents.

Mason Mount (CM) - 7/10 - Fairly anonymous in the first half as Allan and Doucoure disrupted his flow. Almost levelled with a nice chip but could only clip the crossbar. Hit the post with a cunning free kick.

7. Forwards

Kai Havertz (RW) - 5/10 - Had no joy out wide, as Godfrey kept him extremely quiet. Couldn't get into the game or find pockets of space in which to operate. Hooked with 20 minutes to play.

Olivier Giroud (ST) - 5/10 - Didn't offer enough to his teammates, and if he's not serving others, that's the best part of Giroud's game gone. Visibly frustrated and threw Richarlison to the ground.

Timo Werner (LW) - 5/10 - Took up more central positions as he looked to make his mark on the match. Very isolated out wide. Not up to standard in a quiet and pretty abject performance.
