Eidur To Man U?

Last updated : 04 August 2002 By -

Eidur Gudjohnsen's agent has insisted the striker remains happy to remain at Chelsea and

stressed that talks with the club over a pay rise are still ongoing.

Agent Peter Harrison was responding to reports which claimed that Manchester United were

preparing a bid for the striker to make up their complement of four forwards and that negotiations over a new deal had broken down at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea boss Claudio Ranieri has previously stressed his determination to keep hold of Gudjohnsen, who formed a prolific strike partnership with Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink last season. He insisted: "There is no problem. Everyone is very relaxed about the situation and that means Eidur, Chelsea and myself.

"Talks with Trevor Birch [Chelsea's new managing director] have taken place and are ongoing. There is no deadline that has been set and no one is saying 'pay me more or I'm off'.

"Eidur has always been committed to Chelsea. He is very happy there and likes living in London."

To be perfectly frank, stories such as these have been circulating for the last few weeks, the majority of which have been initiated by Mirror Group Newspapers. It is no secret that the aforementioned newspaper have a strained and let’s say fragile relationship with Uncle Ken and all things Chelsea and a result are not that interested in printing anything close to the truth.

They seem to find pleasure in taking the smallest element of truth and accentuating this detail into negative, over exaggerated madness.

For example

Chelsea’s financial debts: Yes the club has debts but so does every club in the country (with the exception of Man U and Liverpool). They seem to forget Chelsea’s assets and investments. Have a good look round The Bridge next time you manage a visit. Do you notice anything different about the place? Look at this years record season ticket sales. Look at the revenue the club generates. Open your eyes and take a good look.

For example

Marcel Desailly’s comments on ChelseaTV: An honest and frank discussion comparing Vialli’s team with Ranieri’s. Yes Vialli’s had more experience and Vialli’s was successful but that team was a short term fix. They were a lot older. They had a short shelf life. Isn’t that the whole reason why Ranieri was brought in? To develop a team of potential, a team for the future? This new squad has depth, has potential and most importantly a blend between youth and experience. These are exciting times at Chelsea, but papers at The Mirror insist on focusing a blue negativity.

I’ve got a good idea, let’s take Marcel’s comments on ChelseaTV, misshape them, take an ingredient of truth and mix that with some exaggerated whispers and hey presto, we’ve managed to fill an entire page (for two/three days) with utter rubbish!

Can you see what I am saying? Do you agree?
