Chelsea winger Christian Pulisic has said that he is ‘excited’ by the arrival of Romelu Lukaku, who has re-joined the Blues for a club record fee of £97.5m from Inter.
Chelsea had been looking for a new striker with an eye on the summer transfer window for several months and also considered Erling Haaland before it became clear that Lukaku was available.
Having played 15 times for Chelsea as a teenager, the Belgian returns to Stamford Bridge off the back of 64 goals in 95 appearances for Inter and has re-established himself as one of the best strikers in the world after losing his way towards the end of his Manchester United spell.Chelsea fans are delighted to have him back, with the existing squad keen to play with him.
“Lukaku’s a great striker. He plays really good with his back to goal, holding the ball, and he’s a great goalscorer, so I’m very excited to play with him. It’s going to be exciting times,” Pulisic told the club’s official website over the weekend.
“We have a very good team with a lot of depth and it’s a really exciting team. When you have a bunch of good players it’s never a bad thing so we’re really excited to see how this year goes.”
90min initially revealed back in May that Lukaku was the preferred choice for Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich, with manager Thomas Tuchel in agreement the club should pursue the player.
Lukaku later publicly stated his intention to stay at Inter, resulting in Chelsea weighing up a £150m approach for Haaland to beat the competition to the Norwegian ahead of his release clause becoming active in 2022. But as Lukaku’s situation evolved, he became the more viable choice.
The 28-year-old was unable to make his second Chelsea debut in the club’s win over Crystal Palace in their Premier League opener due to quarantine restrictions. But he will be in line to play next weekend when the Blues travel across London to face Arsenal.
