Chelsea Tipped to Make Audacious January Move for Liverpool-Linked Timo Werner

Chelsea's name has once again been mentioned in the same sentence as that of RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner, as the January transfer window approaches.

Since the Blues' transfer ban was lifted by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in early December, the club has been linked with some of the biggest names across Europe.

In addition, manager Frank Lampard has suggested the club will hunt for a successor to former talisman Eden Hazard.

One name that has come up repeatedly is that of Werner. The 23-year-old has rattled in 23 goals so far this season and is second only to the indomitable Robert Lewandowski in the Bundesliga top-scorer charts.

The Express is the latest to suggest the young German could be on his way to Stamford Bridge, thanks in no small part to his supposedly lowly £30m release clause.

The report suggests Manchester United, Liverpool and Bayern Munich all harbour an interest in the player, but Chelsea are ready to make a move in January as they prepare to embark upon a £150m spending spree - a budget that was first suggested back in November.

Meanwhile, Leipzig are touted to move for RB Salzburg sensation Erling Haaland as a replacement - but face competition from Manchester United again.

On the whole, there is very little chance of Werner actually signing for Chelsea in January.

Werner is leading the line for a Leipzig side that is top of the Bundesliga at Christmas, two points clear of Borussia Monchengladbach and four points clear of Bayern - objectively the biggest threat to their title push. As previously mentioned, Werner is also pushing Lewandowski all the way in the goalscoring charts.

Why would he want to leave at this stage?

Meanwhile in the Champions League, Leipzig qualified top of their group and will fancy their chances in a last 16 tie against José Mourinho's inconsistent Tottenham side. This also means he would be cup-tied in the competition should be depart the Red Bull Arena.

Then you must consider Chelsea's part in the move. The suggestion that he could come in as another 'option' is also ludicrous. Does Frank Lampard really want to jeopardise Tammy Abraham's form in the first half of the season by bringing in an expensive, young forward whose record means he would demand a starting berth? Doubtful, to say the least - especially judging by Lampard's insistence on sticking with the young players even when Chelsea can splash the cash.

Leipzig have also ridiculed the chances of a move on their official Twitter account, responding to a Chelsea fan who suggested the move was on.

While Werner can also operate out wide, and his low release clause makes him a very attractive option, this it is certainly one to take with a pinch of salt until the summer window rolls around.
