Chelsea takeover: LA Dodgers owner Mark Walter joins Todd Boehly bid

The principal owner of Major League Baseball franchise the Los Angeles Dodgers, Mark Walter, has joined the consortium led by Todd Boehly, in his efforts to buy Chelsea.

Boehly is one of four candidates still left in the race, alongside Sir Martin Broughton, the Ricketts' family and Stephen Pagliuca.

As noted by The Athletic, Boehly now has backing from Walter, whom he knows well from his time with Guggenheim.

Boehly's bid is already backed by Swiss billionaire Hansjorg Wyss and the consortium has now added Walter, whose current worth is estimated at around €4.4bn.

Those in charge of the Dodgers believe their approach to baseball management would translate well to football, and their experience in both stadium renovation, community outreach and on-field success will only work in the bid's favour.

Walter and Boehly will have extra time to discuss the details of their partnership as Raine, the group managing the sale, have pushed the deadline for final offers back to April 18.

Once the offers are in, Raine are expected to announce their recommended candidate to the UK government, but they could delay their final decision and wait for the Premier League to approve each of the four prospective bids before pushing on.
