Chelsea & Liverpool 'make contact' with agent of Saul Niguez

Chelsea and Liverpool have both reached out to the agent of Atletico Madrid midfielder Saul Niguez to discuss a potential transfer.

Saul will be allowed to leave Atletico this summer after tumbling down the pecking order under Diego Simeone, and he has already been replaced in the squad by Argentine playmaker Rodrigo de Paul.

He had been expected to join Barcelona in a trade for Antoine Griezmann, but talks over that deal have broken down and Atletico are now looking at the idea of sending Saul to England, where he has plenty of suitors.

According to Marca, both Chelsea and Liverpool are wrestling to get to the front of the queue for his signature and have met with the 26-year-old's representatives to discuss what would be needed to sign him.

Chelsea's interest is said to stem directly from manager Thomas Tuchel, while Liverpool's may be more of a club-wide decision as part of the quest to replace Georginio Wijnaldum.

There's no mention of how Saul's camp have responded to that interest, although it is noted that they are waiting for an approach from Manchester United as well.

United have been tipped to move for Saul as a replacement for Paul Pogba, who is being pursued by Paris Saint-Germain, although an offer is yet to arrive.

However, the Daily Mail state that those in charge at Old Trafford are growing in confidence that Saul could be snapped up for around £45m and are considering throwing their hat in the ring to sign him in the near future.

Marca believe that figure would get the job done, although Atletico are still thought to be prioritising the Griezmann swap deal and are expected to continue pushing to get that done before considering other options.

Barcelona are willing to do the deal but are demanding that Atletico pay an extra sum on top of swapping Saul, who has also been warned that he won't be handed a monster salary at Camp Nou if he does join.
