Player Ratings: Middlesbrough (h)

Last updated : 05 January 2005 By Liam Corbett
Petr Cech - Never really tested, closest was a Downing strike that took a deflection that he saved well with his feet but that was it. 7

Paulo Ferreira - Solid game, no mistakes and unlucky not to get on the scoresheet with about his first trip into the opponents area this season! 7

John Terry - Very dependable and had Jimmy in his pocket all night. World class. 8

William Gallas - Like JT, he is now on e of the first names on the team sheet. Carvalho better be ready for a spell on the bench, as this is now 4 consecutive games in 10 days without a goal conceded. Well done Willy and JT! 8

Alexey Smertin - Did a job, so to say, at left back. Looked comfortable and is showing why Mourinho wanted him back at the Bridge, with his versitility. 7

Claude Makelele - Kept things ticking over as per normal. Hopefully will be given a break over the next week or so, being 31 and all! 7

Frank Lampard - Two great assists, the first a nice one-two with Cole before sending Drogba through. The second was a quality free kick that Drogba only needed to glance in. Good range of passing as always. 8

Joe Cole - Looked very good early on but seemed to drift away as the game wore on. Two decent efforts but still has a lot to do to make that third midfield place his. Still showed signs of improvement since last season, no longer a show pony. 7

Damien Duff - I commented on how un-selfish he was compared to Robben early on and then he turned into such a single minded player! Could've squared the goalie's clearance to Drogba for an easy hat trick, but decided to have a go himself and hit the bar. Lacked control at the vital time when he went after a spilt Robben shot. His overall game was still great and he did one amazing second half run round about 5 defenders before getting hacked down. He too deserves a rest. 8

Arjen Robben - One decent first half shot that Schwarzer parried into Duff's path. A few nice touches and runs but he never really needed to get into a higher gear. 7

Didier Drogba - Two quality finishes and looked lively all night, clearing corners in our area and nearly scoring with one in their area the next minute. Has different qualities to Henry or Van Nistelrooy, but seems to be finding a way to adapt them to the Premiership. He is far more dominent in the air than those two but maybe lacks the natural finishing of Horseface and the tocuh of Henry. But he'll be the one with the medals come May! 8
