Player Ratings: Liverpool (a)

Last updated : 02 January 2005 By Liam Corbett
Petr Cech - Had to be alert in first half to stop a Nunez deflection, showing great reactions in the process. Stopped a couple of Gerrard efforts but had a reasonably easy day save wise, but was never allowed to lose concentration due to the pressure Liverpool were putting us under. 8

Glen Johnson - Nice header back for the goal, but left us exposed several times in defence and tried sometimes to do too much with the ball. Riise gave him a torried time all afternoon, and I would worry should he have to face someone like Pires, Giggs, etc. Got a booking for a clumsy late challenge towards the end on Riise. Makes you realise what a good job Ferreira does! 6

John Terry - Immense again. The world's best defender as Mourinho called him, and won everything in the air and wasn't worried about putting his boot through it several times to clear our lines. Man of the match. 9

William Gallas - One of his best showings. Needed to use his pace cleverly to stop Pongolle and the French defender will be un-droppable once Carvalho returns, if he keeps playing like this! 8

Paulo Ferreira - Showed all his versitility and expierence to play at left back and still look so composed and in control. £13 million looks a bargain for such a young, calm player who can fill in about 4 positions quite comfortably! 8

Claude Makelele - The un-sung hero played his usual simple football and didn't panic as Liverpool closed him down every time. His place is firmly cemented in the side next to Lamps and so it should be. If only he was about 10 years younger! 8

Frank Lampard - Could've added to our lead later on but his passing was not up to scratch at times. He got booked and broke Alonso's ankle, and will miss the 3rd round FA Cup match against Scunthorpe. Loved the attention the away fans gave him! 7

Tiago - Shocking handball! Someone tell him its not volleyball! He just palmed the ball away and we somehow got away with it. It was similar to the Gallas handball against Scarbrough last term which we got away with too! His general play was poor too, he gave away the ball, tried to do too much and didn't look an £8million player. 5

Arjen Robben - Should've put us 1-0 up when he was 1 v 1 with Dudek, who to be fair did very well. Not a good day for Arjen but I'm sure we can forgive him! Wasn't allowed to get into the game, like Duff, and Liverpool played them very well. 6

Damien Duff - Played too strong a ball for Eidur early in second half, when he had near on an open goal. Gave away too many silly free kicks and, like Robben, wasn't allowed time to play with the ball or create anything. 6

Eidur Gudjohnsen - Should've maybe anticipated Duff's fizzed cross and got on the end of it. Is definetly not a target man and when we are under pressure and need to clear our lines, we need a bigger physical presence up top, like Drogba. His tocuh wasn't what it can be. 6

Subs:

Kezman - Looked lively and nearly got booked as usual! 7

Cole - Rather lucky that his strike hit Carragher and flew in but who cares! His play when he came on was good too, and it seems to be a great tactic to bring him on later on and run at tired defenders who have maybe coped well with Robben and Duff all day! 8

Drogba - Showed little, again, to prove a £24 million price tag.  6
