The victory means that Chelsea now lie in fourth place in the table, level on points with Newcastle having played two games more. Jimmy's two goals were his first in his last four Premiership outings. Zola's goal in injury time was simply the icing on the cake of a magnificent Blues performance.

The Blues started the match at a good pace and could have easily been ahead after 5 minutes when Stanic headed a Hasselbaink cross inches wide of he post. Hasselbaink then went close 7 minutes later when his effort was well saved by Simonsen. But things would trn sour for Chelsea when John Terry limped off with an injury. Claudio Ranieri sent on Zenden in his place, forcing him to reshuffle his players into different positions. Zenden looked threatening from the moment he entered the pitch and went close with a curling left foot effort. But his Dutch international team-mate Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink went one better after 25 minutes. Hasselbaink found himself 25 yards from goal with the ball at his feet, having just turned three men, when he lofted the ball superbly over Simonsen's head and into the back of the net. That goal should have given the Blues confidence but they sat back on the lead and forced Cudicini into several good saves. Gravesen had an effort turned away and Alexandersson fired in a low drive but Cudicini was equal to it, although he got a bit of luck when Ferguson wastefully messed up the rebound. But with moments remaining in the first half, Zenden tapped a 25-yard free kick to Hasselbaink who fired a low shot round the wall and past Simonsen.

Having secured the reult in the first half, Chelsea looked content to play out the second half in a defensive manner. Everton rarely looked threatening and the Blues soaked up what little they did offer going forward. But as the half went on it became evident that Everton had more to offer and Pistone forced Cudicini to save brilliantly with his left foot. Chelsea then took Hasselbaink off to be replaced by young striker Carlton Cole. The match looked to be dying down to a quiet end when, with only four minutes remaining, Radzinski found himself one-on-one with Cudicini. However, Radzinski went too wide and fired his shot wide with nobody guarding the goal. minutes later, Radzinski floated in a cross which was smashed against the crossbar by Duncan Ferguson. Zola's goal in stoppage time was a powerful effort from a Gudjohnsen cross. Chelsea at their very best again...
