Chelsea 1 - West Ham 1

Last updated : 06 February 2002 By Brian Cartlidge
West Ham striker Frederic Kanoute levelled with eight minutes of the game remaining right against the run of play.

The Hammers could quite easily have easily been blown away by then after a superb performance by Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink.

Hasselbaink opened the scoring with a goal from nothing in the 21st minute and was at the heart of all of Chelsea's attacking play.

He picked up the ball 40 yards out on the left and arced the ball past Hammers keeper James from the edge of the penalty box after running at the West Ham defence.

And Hasselbaink was involved in making two first-half chances for strike partner Mikael Forssell, but both were wasted and West Ham hung on.

The Hammers had more bite up front when Defoe was brought on midway through the second half.

The leveller came when Carrick's free-kick from the left side of the penalty box dropped to Kanoute, who turned and shot past keeper Cudicini.
