Transfer Thoughts

Firstly, Jurgen Macho has more or less joined us as an understudy to Carlo Cudicini. Despite Sunderland's relegation, Macho was one of their few players who could actually raise their head high and, despite his steady performances mid way through the season, he still found himself as third choice goalkeeper at The Stadium Of Light.

But their loss is our gain and, in my opinion, Macho will be a huge hit with the Chelsea faithful. Since Bosnich decided to mess around with the devil's dandruff, we haven't really had much competition for Carlo (no offence to Ed de Goey) so it is a welcome signing.

Now to the rumour mill.

Claudio Ranieri apparently wants Gabriel Batistuta to spearhead our Champions League expedition. Despite being 34-years old and filthy rich, Batigol wants a chance to shine in England. I'd rather the Blues took a risk on him than allow one of our London rivals to sign him- he could be a very good signing indeed.

But only a fornight ago, Ken Bates said "I got calls from Italy last summer and one agent offered me Batistuta. He told me 'Batistuta wants to come to Chelsea'. I said 'I'm sure he does, but we've stopped signing pensioners'.

"He told me Batistuta needed no introduction to which I replied: 'Good - because I don't want to meet him'.''

So if Batistuta was a pensioner last year, what does that make him now? It's disrespectful comments like these from Ken Bates that are tainting our image- think before you speak Ken!

Lee Bowyer was another name mentioned as a possible signing. For £30,000 a week and a signing on fee, Bowyer would be a stunning signing. There aren't too many midfielders that can tackle fiercely, pass well and score consistently- Bowyer is one of them. Forget last season, that wasn't the real Bowyer- injuries played a big part in that.

But look back at his previous three seasons and what you see is goals, goals, goals! Forget the court case and occasional indiscipline, get him in and watch Chelsea flourish. Too many of our midfielders underachieve so it's time we got someone in to run the show...

And finally... Philip Cocu. Another player available on a free transfer this summer and almost certain to leave Barcelona. His experience would be invaluable in the Champions League but there is little concrete evidence behind this story so I will not comment any further.

And there you have it, all the transfer gossip from the last week!
