The Blues So Far

Last updated : 06 March 2003 By Rich Godden
Before I share my thoughts on the best Blues players this season, I would like to name and shame the players who haven't lived up to expectations. Firstly, there is JFH. Don't get me wrong he has played well at times this year and scored some vital goals- yet I can't help feeling disappointed with Jimmy's performances this season. Injuries obviously haven't helped him, whilst I think it is fair to say that it wouldn't be considered a disappointment by most strikers- Jimmy just sets his standards so high!

Then there's Baba. He has been sloppy all season and we have looked far more convincing when Le Saux has played there. After such a strong season last year, Baba has really let himself down. His performances are on the up though and I fully expect him to regain top form before the start of next season.

Then there's the midfield trio of Quique De Lucas, Jesper Gronkjaer and Bolo Zenden. Quique has been awful at times after a very bright start to his Chelsea career and I seriously hope that he is just feeling a little homesick. The time to judge him will be next season... which is what we all said about Bolo Zenden last season.

The flying Dutch winger was amazing at the start of the season yet he seems to have crash landed somewhere along the line and never recovered from it. To be fair, he never seems to get a good run in the side to prove himself properly. I still feel as if we haven't truly seen the best of Bolo.

Now to Jesper Gronkjaer. The enigma. Brilliant one minute, awful the next. At his best, there is no better winger than the Gronk. Yet at his worst, it really cannot get much worse! With so much pace, he is always a threat to opposition defences... if only he could bloody cross the ball!

As for the best Chelsea players this season... My top five is:

5) Marcel Desailly- the Rock has certainly lived up to his name this season alongside Gallas at the back. He has been a legend at Chelsea and I for one will be sad to see the day that this great defender decides to call it a day.

4) William Gallas- I have been so impressed with William Gallas this season. Defenders don't get much quicker than Billy and his playing style is ideal for him to be a partner to Marcel or JT. But I think you could play him alongside Ken Bates and we'd still stand a good chance of keeping a clean sheet.

3) Franco Zola- Only number 3, I hear you say. This is simply because of his bad patch at the end of 2002 (if it could be called a bad patch). Such an influence on and off the pitch and generally a very nice bloke. Possibly the most popular foreigner to ever grace the Premiership. Oh, and he was voted Chelsea's greatest ever player!

2) Carlo Cudicini- By far the best goalkeeper in the Premiership, the Italian stallion has probably earnt us over 12 points this season. One save summed Carlo up superbly. At Old Trafford, in front of 60,000+ fans, Ruud Van Nistelrooy leaps to head a cross at goal yet somehow Carlo claws the ball to safety when it looked as if the ball had beaten him. Carlo lets out a huge sigh of relief and stares to the heavens. There truly is a God... and he gave us Carlo Cudicini!

1) Frank Lampard- What more is there to say about Lamps. What an improvement on the player who signed for Chelsea back in 2001- his passing is always accurate, he chips in with his fair share of goals and he covers every blade of grass. He is our heart and soul and will surely become as big a legend at Chelsea as Dennis Wise. If not bigger...
