Selection Dilemma's

Decisions, decisions...

The only player who can say he is certain to start is Carlo Cudicini. Apart from the fact that he has been one of our players of the season, we simply do not have any competition for the goalkeeping position- therefore he is guaranteed a starting berth when fit.

As for the rest of our team, well, your guess is as good as mine. But here's who I would go with and, more importantly, why I would start them.

First things first, we'll go for a back three- JT, Gallas and Desailly. JT to combat the potential aerial presence of Emile Heskey, William Gallas to combat the pace of Michael Owen and Marcel Desailly to offer a calming presence at the back- never mind the fact that he's a classy defender.

Sauxy can play left wing/wing back and you always know what you're getting from him- commitment, experience and a damn good wide player. Right Wing is reserved for the enigmatic Jesper Gronkjaer as you simply do not know when he is going to have a good game. Two of his best performances this year have come against Everton so he may favour playing the Merseyside clubs (caused by a childhood fear of Scousers perhaps?). He can also defend when called upon which could be important depending on Liverpool's team/tactics.

The central midfield duo of Manu Petit and Frank Lampard is due a good game after some pretty poor performances of late (Lamps in particular) and Petit's big game experience make him absolutely vital for this match.

That just leaves us with the attacking options. Franco Zola MUST play no matter what and he is clearly at his most threatening when given a free role- so give him one!

But which two strikers will he be supplying? Many Blues fans are calling for Carlton Cole but I wouldn't play him- there is far too much at stake to be resting on his young shoulders and I still don't think he's quite ready for regular Premiership action.

So that leaves us Eidur Gudhjohnsen and Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink. Neither have played particularly well over the course of the season, but both seem to do well against Liverpool. Eidur scored his first Chelsea goal against 'Pool and JFH has scored a fair few against them in his three seasons at the club. I'm backing them both (assuming they start) to do the business and fire the club into the Champions League.

But this is merely my opinion. It all rests on what Claudio Ranieri thinks...
