Player Ratings: Villa (CC)

Last updated : 19 December 2003 By Rich Godden
Neil Sullivan- Made a couple of top class stops and had no chance with Angel's goal. Perhaps could have pushed the ball out further to have prevented McCann's winner, but that's just being picky. Unfortunately, unless Carlo is struck down with injury, this is the end of Neil's season... 7

Mario Melchiot- Looked out of sorts as part of a back three and was much more at home as part of a four. 7

William Gallas- His error helped Villa take the lead, although he seemed more solid after this. Clearly not at his best though. 7

John Terry- Looked nervous from the word go and never really settled, whether it be part of a back three or four. Lacked composure and seemed to jump into tackles that you wouldn't expect. In general, a very un-JT like performance. 6

Glen Johnson- Sprained his ankle against Bolton on Saturday and you could tell he was feeling it. With Jesper Gronkjaer on the bench, why was Glen risked at all? Struggled throughout until he was replaced 10 minutes into the second half. 6

Celestine Babayaro- Not a great game for Baba but, in all fairness, he didn't do an awful lot wrong.... the trouble is, he didn't actualy do an awful lot! 6

Claude Makelele- Hasn't looked himself since the Man Yoo game, word is he is carrying an injury. That would explain a lot as he was hauled off at the interval! 6

Geremi- Another weak performance by Geremi, although he was part of an out of sorts midfield. His touch let him down at times, although he did show signs of his great vision. 6

Joe Cole- One of the few players who could raise his head high after this game. He ran his little heart out and was by far our best player. His creativity wasn't quite there, but he had a couple of decent runs and shots and he took his goal superbly. 8

Damien Duff- Didn't play that bad really although, like his teammates, he was far from his best. Ranieri's decision to substitute him 10 minutes into the second half was not a tactical decision- Damien is quite clearly knackered! 7

Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink- Jimmy spent half of the game moaning at the ref, Ronny johnsoen or his teammates. Which is a shame because, when he was switched on, he lookeed a threat. You'd think he would have learned by now... 7

Substitutes

Frank Lampard- Came on for the second half and really raised the teams performance. Got any doubts about his quality? You shouldn't after seeing some of his passes today. Just a shame he didn't play the full ninety minutes... 7

Jesper Gronkjaer- Unlucky to have a goal disallowed as he was clearly onside. Had that gone our way it could have all been so different. Other than that his performance was poor. 6

Hernan Crespo- Hernan is frustrating the hell out of me. At times he showed exactly what he can do (the lovely pass for Cole's goal) and then he goes and misses a couple of great chances to win the game. You cannot fault his movement though, it adds another dimension to our game. 6
