Player Ratings: Portsmouth (a)

Last updated : 28 December 2004 By Rich Godden
Petr Cech- Made one outstanding save from a Quashie piledriver, but little else of note to do. Another clean sheet for the giant Czech stopper. 7

Glen Johnson- The future England right back showed just why he is so highly rated with a fantastic showing! Got forward well when required, but it was his defensive work that caught the eye. More performances like today please Jonno. 8

William Gallas- Despite only being half fit, Willy was just as good as ever. Yakubu is one of the toughest strikers to play against in the Premiership, but he was no problem for Gallas and JT! 8

John Terry- Immense! 8

Paulo Ferreira- Asked to play at left back (despite Bridge being on the bench!) and he seemed just as at home as when he plays right back! As always, Paulo picked his moments to go forward carefully and he was never troubled in defence. 8

Claude Makelele- Yet another fine performance by the anchorman, no wonder we are keeping so many clean sheets! At times his passing was stunning, and his tackling was always fierce. 8

Alexey Smertin- An emotional return for Alexey to the club he spent last season on loan, but he showed no sentimentality with some bone-jarring tackles! Used possesion well but was taken off in the second half as we seeked a breakthrough. 7

Frank Lampard- Not at his best again but his battling qualities were evident for all to see. And if this is a blip for Lampard, I feel sorry for the rest of the Premiership! 7

Arjen Robben- Hasn't had the same effect as he was having a month or so ago, but still looks the business- and he is still delivering the goods! Might have got a bit of luck with his goal, but he deserved it after some harsh treatment from the Pompey rearguard. 7

Damien Duff- Caused Pompey all sorts of problems without really delivering an end product, which will have disappointed Duffer. Seemed to improve after Gudjohnsen came on though. 7

Didier Drogba- Massive disappointment today, looked so sloppy at times that you'd have thought he cost £2 million not £24 million! But, just as he was preparing to be subbed, missed a great chance to score and that is why he is always a threat! 6

Subs

Eidur Gudjohnsen- Came on for Drogba early in the second half and missed an absolute sitter! But we looked better as a team with Eidur up top and his link play was a big part in the victory! 7

Joe Cole- On for Smertin with the game evenly poised and he turned it on it's head! Scared the life out of the Pompey backline and was rewarded for his excellent play with a great goal at the death! 8

Geremi- Replaced Robben immediately after the Dutchman's goal and did well to steady the ship in midfield. A great utility player to have on the bench, who you can always rely on to to a good job in the middle of the park. 7
