Player Ratings: Liverpool (h)

Last updated : 08 January 2004 By Rich Godden
Carlo Cudicini- Didn't put a foot wrong as he had absolutely no chance for the Cheyrou goal. But he didn't do anything right either, but that was not his fault- Liverpool only had the one shot on target all game! 6

Glen Johnson- One of his poorer games for Chelsea. Far too casual defensively and tried to be too flash in attack, making it an all round woeful performance for Glen. And to think this is the same player who showed so much maturity in the game at Anfield on the opening day of the season... 5

William Gallas- Good performance by William, underlining how important he is for the team. He and JT are made for each other and we look a far better side with William in it, regardless of his partner. 7

John Terry- Unlucky not to stop Heskey's cross reaching Cheyrou for the goal, but he can hardly be blamed for that. Lost out regularly in the air to Heskey but his recovery was always immaculate. Led by example and showed real desire today. If only some of the other players shared his mentality. 8

Wayne Bridge- Looked clueless tonight. Defended well enough the majority of the time but nowadays a full back has to offer something in the attacking sense. And on a day when we needed some good service from the flanks, Wayne just wasn't there. 6

Claude Makelele- Showed his usual tenacity in his tackling, but his passing badly let him down. Gave the ball away far too much and didn't play high enough up the field against an opposition that lacked adventure. 6

Geremi- Totally ineffective. He has a habit of just drifting through games. Went close with one shot and provided the odd decent shot. Other than that, it was pretty poor stuff from the Cameroon vice captain. 5

Frank Lampard- Really wanted it and showed exactly why he is a vital member of this side. Didn't look as tired as he has of late and ran his heart out. A few of the new signings could do worse than look at the example of Frank Lampard and John Terry. 8

Joe Cole- Why was everyone so desperate for Joe to be given a run in the side? He seems far more impressive in his substitute roles and has done very little since signing to suggest he warrants a place in the midfield. Against Liverpool, he lacked ideas and, despite the odd decent flick, was ineffective. 6

Adrian Mutu- He puts so much effort into games, he shows a real desire to win but he just can't get that goal at the moment. Looked genuinely upset at the way things were going and it was great to see him lambast Diouf when the diving Senegalese winger was faking an injury near the touchline. But the residing memory of Mutu from this game was him hitting the bar from two yards out and looking like he was about to cry. I really felt for him then... 7

Hernan Crespo- Injured almost immediately, taken off after 10 minutes to be replaced by....

Eidur Gudjohnsen- Went very close with one effort but this will be a game Eidur would rather forget. Rather than showing his recent desire, he looked frustrated the whole time when things weren't going for him. 6
