On The Defensive

Two unlikely heroes yesterday came in the form of Marcel Desailly and William Gallas. Chelsea's central defensive partnership, not content with keeping a clean sheet, both scored to help us to a 3-0 win. When will people start recognising them as the Premiership's best central defensive pairing?

They continue to defy opposition strikers and it looks as if, when they are found out of position, they are given a lot of back up from Le Saux and Melchiot. And when they aren't there we have Carlo Cudicini to save us.

I'd also like to touch upon Marcel Desailly's attitude. Before the start of the season Marcel told the press that, at times in his Chelsea career, he has not always given 100%. Not really what you want to hear from your skipper to boost team morale ahead of a tough season.

But since those comments, he has barely put a foot wrong. The man lives up to his nickname- he really is the rock at the heart of our defence. And he seems to be enjoying himself aswell which makes it all the more rewarding for a player of his age.

Manu Petit is another player that I would like to talk about. I think we all had high hopes for the French World Cup and European Championship winner when he arrived last summer. But his performances were distinctly average and I can only think back to about two games when I thought he had earnt his money.

And he didn't start very well this season as a lack of fitness and niggling injuries kept him out of the team. However, his return to the side, and the return of his form, have coincided with Chelsea's 8 game unbeaten run.

If he stays fit and doesn't take his foot off the gas, then we may have the most technically gifted holding midfielder in the country back back to his best and leading us to glory...

JFH is another player who looks to be getting back to his best. He is now scoring on a regular basis and I have noticed that he has really smashed in a few with his left foot. Perhaps he has been working hard in training to try and become more two-footed.

In fact, he has scored three of his five goals this season with his left peg. And, if I'm not mistaken, he scored a header against Bolton, meaning the only goal he has scored with his right foot has been from the penalty spot against West Ham!

Maybe his return to form is why Claudio has allowed Carlton Cole to join Wolves on a month's loan. It's a shame really, because I was looking forward to seeing Carlton go head to head with Wayne Rooney in the Worthington Cup tie in midweek.

Hopefully if we can get a win in that one, then it will force Everton on to the backfoot next weekend in our match against them at Goodison Park. Not that they need much encouragement- five 1-0 wins took them up to third before they lost to Newcastle today... and even then they were less than 10 minutes away from repeating the trick!

And remember, get your emails in for the Zola Petition... not long left before the winner is announced!
