More Than Just Football At Stake...

Chelsea vs Liverpool- always a game to look forward to, seeing as they've not beaten us at The Bridge since 1989!

Last season saw us thump the scousers 4-0, having smashed them 3-0 the previous season. This year, I'd settle for a 1-0. Because, at the end of the day, it's only the result that matters.

This season Chelsea have played some great football- and I mean great- yet we haven't reaped the rewards. A gritty performance at Old Trafford against Man United, a game which many thought we deserved to win, saw us come away with nothing thanks to a last minute Forlan goal.

2-1 was also the scoreline when we visited St James' Park yet, having seen Frank Lampard cancel out a JFH own goal, we once again allowed our opposition to get the better of us- Olivier Bernard scoring the winner on this occasion...

I could keep going on and on, but I'm going to spare you the boredom! However, there is one game I want you all to cast your minds back to. A sunny October day in Liverpool (does such a thing exist??). A resiliant Chelsea, inspired by the brilliant William Gallas and Marcel Desailly, put in a sterling performance against the Reds- some might argue we were the better side that day.

Yet all the record books will show is Liverpool (Owen 90') 1-0 Chelsea.

If the record books show the same for May 11th 2003, Chelsea football club will be in dire straits.

Forget a new contract for Jody Morris straight away. Pay rises for Gudjohnsen and Terry- if they're lucky! Man United need a good keeper as well for an assault on next season's Champions League and I hear that Chelsea have a pretty good one. Oh yeah that will be Carlo Cudicini, our saviour so often this season.

And the question on everybody's mind is: will Franco Zola stay for another year? Without Champions League football that seems very unlikely. The prospect of Chelsea without Zola doesn't bear thinking about...

Leeds United have paid the price for failure- how long until Chelsea FC do? Ask me on Sunday...
