Are Chelsea Ready For The Champions League?

First things first, I think the current Chelsea squad is to be without at least one player: one, Jody Morris. Jody appears to have become disillusioned with life on the Stamford Bridge bench so it now seems almost certain that he will be moving to Blackburn on a Bosman free transfer.

I have previously argued that the club should ensure that Jody Morris stays but, having seen some of his more recent performances, I think it would be an awful decision to offer him the £25,000+ a week that he is reportedly demanding. He seems to have lost that great potential that he once had and now he has become an average midfielder.

Who to replace him with? Well, considering next season will probably see us play in excess of 55 games, I say either buy a player who can play in our first team (not a squad player) or give some of our youngsters more of a chance to impress. This will all depend on what, if any, funds Claudio Ranieri is given.

We could do with a decent, young back up goalkeeper to Carlo Cudicini and we have been linked with a fair few so I expect something to develop in this area.

Defensively, we just need to ensure that we keep the current personell on board. It really is as simple as that. Chapi Ferrer will be gone, but he has barely figured this year- that's not to say he won't be dearly missed. There aren't many more popular figures in the Chelsea dressing room than Chapi.

Midfield is the main area that needs strengthening. Claudio needs to discover who his best four midfielders are. Frank Lampard is clearly one of them. As for the other three... who knows? Jesper Gronkjaer needs to be more consistent but I think he is our best wide player on the books. In fact, I'd go as far as to say that Gronks could be one of the surprises of next season...

Sauxy is a must for the squad, even if he doesn't play that often. Experience will be vital next year. That is why Manu Petit will also have a big part to play. Bolo Zenden, despite still being a couple of years on the right side of 30, has plenty of big time experience as well. He has played in the Champions League for both PSV and Barcelona, not to mention France 98 and Euro 2000 with Holland.

The less said about Quique De Lucas' debut season the better. To say he was poor is an understatement but it was his first year and he deserves another chance. I still recall his 35-yard stunner for Espanyol that won him goal of the season in Spain a couple of years back. So I live in hope that he will come good!

Now, on to who we should buy. Lee Bowyer is available for £500,000 which is an absolute bargain for a player who has Champions League experience. His form has been very much hit and miss this season but he has proved in the past that he is top class. And it wasn't too long ago that he was laying on a goal for Alan Smith in an England international against Portugal...

In attack, we will have plenty of firepower, regardless of whether Franco Zola stays or not. Yet, God forbid, if the little genius does decide to call it a day we will be seriously lacking in the creativity department. But in terms of actual strikers, Hasslebaink, Gudjohnsen, Forssell and Cole should have more than enough goals between them. As long as all four get a full pre season behind them they will be tough to handle. First choice strike partnership for next season? Too tough to call in my opinion...
