Unsettled Modric blasts old school training at Tottenham

Last updated : 16 October 2011 By Daily Mail

While close to manager Harry Redknapp, ?40million-rated Modric is sceptical that Spurs can compete with the elite in European football with 'old school' coaches Joe Jordan and Kevin Bond taking charge of practice sessions and inexperienced former players such as Tim Sherwood, Clive Allen and Les Ferdinand backing them up.

Out of step: Luka Modric is not impressed with the training methods

Modric's doubt was one of the major reasons behind his desire to join Chelsea last summer and why negotiations to improve his ?45,000-a-year contract at Spurs are dragging on.

However, a source said: 'It's not about money for Luka at the moment. He has just turned 26 and feels time is running out to play at the very top level.

'Spurs have a very good team but Luka has doubts over the way the squad are trained and prepared and whether they can be as successful as Chelsea in the next few years.'

Spurs face Newcastle United today chasing their fifth win in a row and the Croatia midfielder is being sold a long-term vision of the club by chairman Daniel Levy beyond Redknapp's time in charge.

Luka here: Spurs want Modric to commit his future to the club

The 64-year-old is the clear favourite to replace Fabio Capello as England manager.

Perhaps aware of Modric's concerns, Redknapp was open to the idea of selling him in the summer to finance the signings of other players, but Levy turned down three bids from Chelsea.

There was also friction between Redknapp and Modric, Niko Kranjcar and Vedran Corluka last season after the manager froze out their fellow Croat Stipe Pletikosa, who has since moved to FC Rostov.

Modric suffered a blow in midweek when Greece came from behind to beat Georgia and put Croatia into a Euro 2012 play-off against Turkey, managed by Guus Hiddink.
