Transfer rumours: Newcastle want Muller, Real Madrid optimistic on Haaland

The January transfer window has been shut for less than a week, but newly-moneyed Newcastle are still being linked with big-name players.

Bild in Germany reckon the Magpies are keen on a summer move for Bayern Munich stalwart Thomas Muller, who is out of contract in 2023. Die Roten are reaching a point where they need to make a decision over the veteran's future, although this is probably one to take with a large pinch of salt.

Midfielder Isaac Hayden could be on his way out of the club after being omitted from Newcastle's 25-man Premier League squad, with TEAMtalk claiming a number of European sides are in for him.

Manchester United outcast Jesse Lingard was a January target for the Magpies, but he was kept at Old Trafford and now the Mirror reports his treatment has upset some members of interim manager Ralf Rangnick's squad.

The star of last summer's big transfer saga, Harry Kane, could avoid a repeat this year as he is apparently loving life under Antonio Conte at Tottenham.

Speaking after the FA Cup victory over Brighton, the England captain said: “He's been brilliant. I can’t speak highly enough of him as a coach or a person, he has really changed the mindset of a lot of players in the team."

Man City were the other big players in that saga, but it seems there is no stress at the Etihad Stadium over whether manager Pep Guardiola will extend his stay there. The Catalan's current contract expires in 2023, but the Mirror write that the players are confident he will pen fresh terms, with the feeling that he wants to create a dynasty.

In Spain, Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has been describes as 'optimistic' of signing Borussia Dortmund goalscoring sensation Erling Haaland. Sport reckon Los Blancos' offer is the highest at the moment, and there is a willingness to sacrifice talisman Karim Benzema to make way for the Norwegian.

However, Barcelona are staying in the know about the situation and aren't ready to give up the chase just yet.

One outgoing at Camp Nou that never came to pass in January was Ousmane Dembele. Tottenham supposedly 'held talks' for the winger at the end of the transfer window as Barça attempted to force the contract rebel out of the club, although it was Chelsea who pushed hardest to land him, according to Mundo Deportivo.
