Roma confirm Chelsea have Tammy Abraham buy-back clause

Roma general manager Tiago Pinto has confirmed Chelsea have a buy-back clause for striker Tammy Abraham, but says the club are not currently worried about losing him.

Abraham joined the Serie A side in the summer after being ostracised by Blues manager Thomas Tuchel and has started well, scoring ten goals in 22 league appearances with Roma sixth in Italy's top flight.

The England international set Roma back €40m plus bonuses once it became clear he had no future at Stamford Bridge, with Chelsea signing Romelu Lukaku from Inter as their new striker.

Now, Pinto has revealed the Blues do have a buy-back clause for Abraham if they want to re-sign him in the future, though stressed Roma are not thinking of parting ways with the former Aston Villa loanee anytime soon.

He said: “It’s true, that clause does exist, but we are not worried. It’s only valid from 2023, but I am not concerned. I am happy because he is playing well and can get even better.”

Roma did manage to strengthen their squad during the January transfer window, bringing in Ainsley Maitland-Niles and Sergio Oliveira on loan from Arsenal and Porto respectively.

Abraham had a decent record at Chelsea, scoring 30 goals in 82 appearances in all competitions, but his game time dramatically decreased once Tuchel took over as Frank Lampard's successor. The likes of Timo Werner, Kai Havertz and even Olivier Giroud were preferred up front as they went on the win the Champions League.
