'Newcastle were fantastic,' says Scolari

Luiz felipe Scolari and Joe Kinnear are managers poles apart in terms of title won but the 0-0 draw at stamford Bridge shows that the Englishman has the upper hand - for now.
Here is their post-match word of wisdon.

"Newcastle were fantastic. They played for a draw - 1 million per cent," says Scolari.

"They did not come for a win. They came for a point or to lose 1-0 or 2-0.

"But they were better than us because they got what they wanted and we did not.

"We wanted to win. We had 24 attempts on goal. Newcastle United had not one ball at goal.

"We had 70 per cent possession. If we get one goal, we win the game.

"We can only sort this out on the training ground and by changing the position of players.

"If they play 10 men at the back we need a goal.

."I have no problem with the players going away on international duty. That did not affect today's performance.

It was my fault and of course the fault of the players.

"It is easier to win away from Stamford Bridge. That is because the home fans want their team to attack but that is not expected of them when they come to Stamford Bridge.

"Of course I wish that [Didier] Drogba had not picked up that coin and [thrown it at Burnley fans and not ] got banned, but my team is not just about one player. We are a team."

Joe Kinnear was understandably delighted.

"Scolari congratulated me for the point and I don't make an apology for playing for it, either.

"I planned for this result for three days - to make Chelsea play in front of us. I brought Michael Owen back into the side and played him in a deeper role.

To be fair to us, everything they did was long shots and Shay given made two world-class saves. We had one good chance and could have even nicked it.

"That was our best performance of the season.

When I was asked to take this job on, the deal was to do a job until the club was sold - nothing's changed.

"We put bodies in front of the ball to stop Chelsea and Habib Beye was sensational.

We got our rewards. Things have gone wrong fro us late on in games and I worried that it was going to happen again. This draw feels like a win. When we drew at home against Wigan when they scored late -it felt like a defeat.

"I will speak to the owner [Mike Ashley] about the game. My contract was due to run out after the Middlesbrough game but I was told yesterday that I had another month in charge.

I think I'll be here over Christmas so I might try and twist Ashley's arm and bring some players in but I will also try and shift a few fringe players - well those who I don't think will play for Newcastle.

"Ashley is currently taking to Americans about buying the club. But their offer was well below the estimate of what he thinks the club is worth.

So Chelsea remain top of the league while Newcastle can be assured that the point won was a vital point in their battle against relegation.
