Mason Mount reveals why he missed Newcastle win

Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount has confirmed he missed the 3-0 victory over Newcastle on Saturday due to illness and revealed it is not Covid-19 related.

One of the Blues' regular starters, Mount has been impressive recently and scored a hat trick in the 7-0 demolition of Norwich last week. There was no talk of him missing out at the weekend during the buildup to the clash at St James' Park.

After full time, Mount tweeted: "Gutted to have missed the game but what a performance from the lads to get the win!

"Woke up and didn’t feel 100% (non COVID related) but will hopefully be fully recovered over the next couple of days. Up the CHELS!"

Thomas Tuchel added: “He should have started but he got ill overnight and so we sent him home to London so that we can take care of him better and that he can recover better.”

Chelsea have dealt with a number of injuries in recent weeks, with forwards Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner not expected to return to action before the international break, while midfielder Mateo Kovacic will also be absent for a few weeks. However, Andreas Christensen, Cesar Azpilicueta and Ruben Loftus-Cheek have all returned to fitness.

The club's injury issues didn't affect Tuchel's side too much on Saturday, however,

After a tight first half, wing back Reece James scored twice in 12 minutes before Jorginho's penalty concluded the 3-0 scoreline. The victory gives Chelsea a three point lead at the top of the Premier League, with title rivals Liverpool and Manchester City both dropping points.

They are back in European action when they take on Malmo on Tuesday in the Champions League looking to catch up with Juventus at the top of Group H. After that, Chelsea host Burnley at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.
