Erling Haaland wage demands for 2022 transfer revealed

Borussia Dortmund striker Erling Haaland has been tipped to request wages of £500,000 per week if he completes a high-profile transfer in the summer.

Haaland is one of the hottest commodities on the market thanks to a stunning record of 99 goals in 96 club appearances for Red Bull Salzburg and Dortmund since the start of the 2019/20 season – 70 of those goals have come in 69 games for Dortmund alone since January 2020.

But the 21-year-old Norwegian could be on the move because of a €75m (£63.4m) release clause in his contract that becomes active at the end of this season.

That transfer fee is incredibly low given his age, current ability and long-term potential and any decision on his next club would be expected to be driven by who can offer the best overall package.

During the summer reports in Germany claimed, when there had been strong interest from Chelsea prior to landing Romelu Lukaku, that Haaland’s camp were asking for an €1m (£850,000) per week. However, the latest from ESPN suggests the amount is closer to £500,000, or €600,000.

That £500,000 per week figure has been sourced from ‘senior’ officials at interested clubs.

Such an amount is more or less the going rate for the very best players in the world. It is not as much as Lionel Messi earns at PSG but is in the same ballpark as Cristiano Ronaldo’s current deal at Manchester United, and will be comparable to what Kylian Mbappe is on next season.

Manchester United have retained interest in Haaland since narrowly missing out in his signature in 2020, while Manchester City and Real Madrid are on his tail. Chelsea are also still not out of it despite already spending £97.5m on Romelu Lukaku ahead of this season.

ESPN notes that Bayern Munich and PSG are considered further ‘behind’ in the race.
