Chelseas Possible XI For The Season Ahead

Last updated : 12 August 2013 By DSG

My latest installment of 'Possible XI's'' for the Premier Leagues top teams takes me to West London. The most difficult as Chelsea have a fantastic array of talent and serious strength in depth; and with the return of Jose Mourinho, Chelsea are justifiably favorites to lift the Premier League Crown come May.

GK: Petr Cech

With Belgian Thibaut Courtois sent on loan to Athletico Madrid for the third season running, Mourinhos old favorite Petr Cech will start in goal for Chelsea. One of the best Premier League Goalkeepers over the last decade.

Formation: 4-2-3-1

Defence:

RB: Branislav Ivanovic

CB: John Terry

CB: Gary Cahill

LB: Ashley Cole

John Terry is not getting any younger but I fully expect him to form a solid defensive partnership with fellow England man Gary Cahill in the heart of Chelseas defence. Ashley Cole is one of the worlds best left-backs and will be one of the the first names of Mourinhos teamsheet. Branislav Ivanovic gets the nod at right-back but expect Cesar Azpilicueta to push him hard for his place.

Midfield:

CM: Ramires

CM: David Luiz

RAM: Juan Mata

CAM: Oscar

LAM: Eden Hazard

Rumours are rife that David Luiz could join Barcelona, but I believe that the Brazilian will be an integral part of Mourinhos team, joining the industrious Ramires in the centre of midfield. Expect Frank Lampard to feature heavily during the season too though, prolific last season, the 35 year old was a favorite of Mourinhos last time the former Inter Milan coach was in charge at Stamford Bridge.

In attacking midfield and on the wings is where Jose Mourinho will have a selection headache, but what an fearsome attacking trio Mata, Oscar and Hazard will be. New signing Andre Schurrie and Kevin de Bruyne, back after a loan spell from Werder Bremen will also push for starts, so chances will be limited for Nigerian winger Victor Moses.

Forward:

ST: Wayne Rooney

With Manchester United star Wayne Rooney reportedly ready to hand in a transfer request, and Chelsea are hot in pursuit of the England star. What a marquee signing he would be to start of Mourinho's second coming. Romelu Lukaku will also push for starts, back after a fruitful loan spell at West Brom, Mourinho is a big admirer of the Drogba-esque player. If Fernando Torres rediscovers his form, Mourinho has serious options up-front.
