Chelseas Ashley Cole wont be joining Twitter

He has appeared on the front page as often as he has the back after his relationship with ex-wife Cheryl and after he accidentally shot and wounded a 21-year-old student at Chelsea's training ground.

But the England defender insists he is merely misunderstood - and has no plans to hit back via Twitter.

Lost in translation: Ashley Cole (second left) claims he is misunderstood

'Judge me on how I play football or judge me on when you meet me. Come and speak to me; if I'm a so-and-so, then fair enough, say it - but a lot of people judge others too quickly without actually knowing the fullfacts or the actual real person,' he told BBC's Football Focus.

'If someone had actually seen the incident - you wouldn't laugh becauseit was a stupid thing to do - but the whole situation was crazy. Of course it was an accident. But if I wanted to address every single thingin the papers I'd lose my mind. It makes me crazy now when I hear things. I'm just here to play football. That's all I want to do.

'The guy was cool and things like that were dealt with. I don't need to come out and try prove myself or say sorry to everyone else because I said sorry to the boy and that's the main thing.

'I have made mistakes and just have to live with it, but at the end of the day I just want to play football.'

Social media network Twitter has hit the headlines this week after Newcastle United midfielder Joey Barton hit out at the club.

He was duly made available on a free transfer and United have banned their players from discussing the St James's Park club on the internet.

And Cole has no intention of joining the craze.

He said: 'Never. It's certain people's preferences but I prefer to keep myself to myself.'

On the field, Cole is determined to win the Champions League with Chelsea.

He added: 'It's something that when a player hasn't won it, they want to win it,' said Cole.

'And a lot of the players in this Chelsea team have not won it so the hunger is still there.

'You look back on your career and see what other medals and big trophiesyou've won. A lot of the players have won the Premier League three times, so if they did finish their careers without winning the ChampionsLeague it would kill them.'

Age no barrier: Cole has no qualms about Andre Villas-Boas's age

Cole is also looking forward to working with new Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas and has no concerns about the age difference.

Cole is 30 and Villas-Boas is only three years older. 'I don't think age matters,' he said. 'He's the manager and we have to respect him and do the best that we can for him.'

Cole was brought up by his mother and admits he is 'lucky' with a career where it pays wages even he calls crazy.

He said: 'A lot of people don't realise that a lot of us have grown up with nothing. We just want what everyone wants. Of course it's crazy money that we get but we sacrifice a lot growing up.

'You have to be lucky because if I hadn't made it I'd have been struggling. I wasn't the best in school, so it would have been hard for me. I'm just one of these lucky people to have been privileged to make it.'
