The Champions League knockout draw is about to get underway at UEFA HQ in Nyon, Switzerland, with the competition edging towards the business end of proceedings after the group stage.
It is a random draw but with several important caveats as each seeded group winner is to be paired against an unseeded group runner-up, while country protection also remains in place at this stage. Clubs who qualified from the same group will also be kept apart for this round.
Clubs in the Champions League last 16 draw
Manchester City (Group A winners)
Liverpool (Group B winners)
Ajax (Group C winners)
Real Madrid (Group D winners)
Bayern Munich (Group E winners)
Manchester United (Group F winners)
Lille (Group G winners)
Juventus (Group H winners)
Paris Saint-Germain (Group A runners-up)
Atletico Madrid (Group B runners-up)
Sporting CP (Group C runners-up)
Inter (Group D runners-up)
Benfica (Group E runners-up)
Villarreal (Group F runners-up)
Red Bull Salzburg (Group G runners-up)
Chelsea (Group H runners-up)
Heading into 2022, last 16 first leg ties will be split across consecutive weeks on either 15/16 February or 22/23 February. The return legs will follow on 8/9 March or 15/16 March. The seeded clubs will also have the added advantage of playing last 16 second leg ties at home.
This is the first season in which the away goals rule has been scrapped, so extra-time is guaranteed if an aggregate score-line is level at the end of the second leg.
