Blues fail with Meireles approach

Liverpool are awaiting a new bid from Chelsea for Raul Meireles after rejecting a ?7m player-plus-cash bid for the midfielder.

Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas is a big fan of the Portugal player having worked with him before at Porto and offered ?7 million plus former Reds midfielder Yossi Benayoun in attempt to take him to Stamford Bridge.

But Meireles was one of Liverpool's stand-out performers in a disappointing campaign last season in his first year in the Premier League and is not one of the players that Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish is looking to move on.

Chelsea are now weighing up whether to make an improved offer for the Portugal international, who is currently sidelined by a shoulder injury, but it's thought unlikely that Liverpool will allow him to leave before the transfer window closes. Benayoun has failed to establish himself at Chelsea after ending his three-year stay at Anfield and joining them on a free transfer last summer and has also been linked with a switch to Arsenal.
