Flashbacks: vs Aston Villa, FA Cup Final '00

Last updated : 12 April 2004 By Liam Corbett

It took 37 years for the blues to claim the FA Cup back after winning it in 1970, and we had to wait until 1997 to get it again.

Then, 3 years later, another one comes along!

And again, we have Mr Di Matteo to thank!

His scrambled goal after 73 mins won the cup, and the captain Dennis Wise collected the cup with son Henry in arm. The on loan legend George Weah also collected a FA Cup winners medal.

George had quickly been taken to blues fan's hearts after he came off the bench to score the winner against Spurs on his debut!

To get to the final Chelsea had got past Hull with a Chris Sutton hat trick, a comfortable 2-0 home win over Forest, a 2-1 home win over Leicester and a 5-0 mullering of Gillingham! We then defeated Newcastle 2-1 in the Semi finals at Wembley, thanks to two Gus Poyet strikes.

Robbie's name was chanted loud and clear at the Boro fans on Saturday and it should be!

Aston Villa's keeper that day, David James, had another calamity for the goal. A high corner he came for and failed to reach, and Di Mateo blasted home from close range.

So for today's game? Well Villa beat us in the Carling Cup this season 2-1, and we have a less than impressive record at Villa Park. Whether we're playing Villa or Man Yoo !
